چکیده

IN THE IXVESTIGATION of neuromuscular disease, histologic examination of skeletal muscle biopsies is generally accepted as an important part both of routine diagnostic procedures and of more specialized research. The purpose of the present report is to establish that the use of histoand cytochemical technics combined with light microscopy is also an essential aspect of both types of investigation. Substantiating evidence is presented in the form of 6 examples, chosen from recent studies, of cytopathologic changes in neuromuscular disease as demonstrated by these technics. Two fundamental types of abnormalities in skeletal muscle are detectable with histoand cytochemical technics: (a) a generalized change of a given reaction, for example, loss of phosphorylase activity, and (b) a localized change of activity confined either to a specific type of muscle fiber (as in the new myopathy with rod-shaped structures) or to certain regions of individual muscle fibers (as in target fibers and central core disease). Further, if the cytochemical technics are s&ciently refined, they may be used to demonstrate the functional activity of fine structural components of the muscle cell. On the basis of such data, predictions can often be made as to the fine structural changes which electron-microscopy will reveal. It must be understood, though, that some cytochemical changes might not be accompanied by changes of fine structure and vice versa. Cytochemisq combined with electron-microscopy would give even more detailed information, but this approach

Effects of Buthus eupeus Venom on Neuromuscular Transmission on Striated Muscle In Vitro

In this study, effects of Buthus eupeus venom on chick biventer cervices nerve-muscle preparation were investigated by twitch tension method. The venom, at 1.3 ?g/ml, increased contractile responses in indirect stimulations. These effects were milder in direct muscle stimulations. It also caused significant enhancement in postjunctional sensitivity as assessed by responses to exogenous acetylch...

The Response of Skeletal Muscle-Expressed Neurotrophins to Acute Resistance Exercise in Male Wistar Rats

Background. BDNF and NT-4/5 have been proposed to be involved in the coordinated adaptations of the neuromuscular system to the elevated level of activity, but an activity-dependent expression of neurotrophins in skeletal muscle is not well established. Objectives. We, therefore, investigated the effect of one session of resistance exercise on mRNA expression of some neurotrophins in Slow and ...

Sarcopenia and planning to management: review article

Life expectancy has increased throughout the world and, as a result, the population of the elderly is also rising. From the age of 30 years old, the human body mass loses about 0.1 to 0.5% of its skeletal muscle mass annually, which is accelerated after the age of 65 years old. Aging is characterized by a decrease in the progression of musculoskeletal and physical activity known as sarcopenia. ...

Role of resistance training with the approach of blood flow restriction in skeletal muscle cell growth

Background: The aim of this study was to investigate the response of ERK1/2 protein and muscular morphological adaptations to a period of resistance training with local blood flow restriction. Materials and methods: Twenty healthy male Wistar rats without clinically evident disease (5 weeks old, 120±7 g weight) were divided into four equal groups: control, control with limited blood flow...
